lake como

A hidden gem

If you're looking for a fun day trip during your stay at River's Fork Lodge, we'd recommend driving an hour up Highway 93 into Montana to relax at Lake Como. Along the way, you'll be treated to scenic views of the Bitterroot River as it meanders northward. You'll also have the opportunity to visit Darby, a fun town with some good restaurants and some great places to buy souvenirs. And, yes, it is also where they film parts of the Yellowstone TV series, including the famous Dutton Ranch, which is known as Chief Joseph Ranch in real life.

But the real highlight of the day will likely be found at Lake Como, where you can choose your own adventure or just relax and watch the kids play in the sand at the public beach. We love taking the SUPs and kayaks and touring the shore of the lake. If you go far enough, you'll discover jaw-dropping views of the steep Bitterroot Mountains as they drop into the canyons below. You can also hike or mountain bike the 8-mile Lake Como Loop Trail that also features a pack bridge at Rock Creek.

Lake Como tips

If you're planning to visit Lake Como, be aware that the water levels vary throughout the year because it's a reservoir. It generally opens in May and stays full until August. Be sure to bring your own water because there are no drinking fountains. Also, because it's managed by the Forest Service, there is a $5 fee per vehicle and parking is pretty limited. We recommend getting there early if you're planning to visit on a weekend in the summer.

Lake life plus river life

A trip north of the Idaho border is a rewarding way to spend a summer day. Be sure to book your stay at River's Fork Lodge so you can spend the evening next to the peaceful sounds of the Salmon River!
